Greymatter Sandviken

Greymatter Sandviken explores how new construction and adaptive reuse can renew Bergen’s waterfront. For their 2026 bachelor diploma projects, ENSAAMA students investigated two complementary situations: rebuilding within an urban void and introducing new uses into the preserved Prefaboden building.

The course examines how architecture can strengthen the relationship between everyday life, built heritage and the waterfront in Sandviken, Bergen.

Two project situations frame the work. An urban void offers the opportunity to introduce new spaces and reconnect the surrounding neighbourhood. The preserved Prefaboden building invites students to work with an existing structure, exploring how its spatial and material qualities can accommodate contemporary uses.

Through mapping, site drawings, plans, sections and spatial visualisations, students develop individual proposals across the scales of landscape, architecture, interiors and furniture. Their projects explore places for gathering, making, learning, living and bathing, with particular attention to access, shared activities and the relationship with the fjord.

The proposals include cafés and meeting places, craft and music workshops, artist accommodation, facilities for cyclists, bathing spaces and waterfront connections. Together, they present different approaches to transforming Sandviken through careful additions and the adaptation of its existing buildings.

The slideshow presents a selection of work from the 2026 third-year DNMADE bachelor diploma projects at ENSAAMA.
